Restoran Five Star (Really Cheap Kampung Chicken Rice / Non - Halal) - Not avaliable

NOT AVALIABLE.... ANYONE KNEW IF IT SHIFTED OR CLOSED DOWN?

Ever wonder what are Kampung Chickens?

Kampung Chickens are free-range chickens that are allowed to roam instead of being caged. Though scrawnier than their farmed counterparts, these chickens are generally considered to have higher nutritional value. They feed on natural vegetation and are not administered hormone injections. Hence, Kampung Chickens are said to have less fat and more lean meat with a better texture, thus fetching a higher price.

To taste succulent Kampung Chicken with fragrant rice and fiery hot chilli on an unbeatable cheap budget; there can only be Johor Bahru's Five Star Kampung Chicken Rice - 5 star in the true sense of the word.

If you cannot decide
what to order,
just order their set menus at an
unbeatable affordable pricing.

I decided on the set menu for 4.
See for yourself the great food at great price.
Spicy Hot Chilli.
Want to have the best of both worlds?
No worries, you can request a mixture of the meat.
The "Kampung" meat is really tender and juicy yet not oily,
unlike the hormone enhanced chicken meat
found in most of SG hawker stalls.
You must try their roasted meat,
it is on par with Chinatown's best
crispy counterpart.
Generous servings of fishball soup.
Their fried beancurd is crispy on the exterior,
the interior simply melts in your mouth.
Superb!
Simple vegetable for a balanced
healthy meal.
Not forgetting their fragrant rice....
And a drink to quench your thirst
after a wonderful meal.

Pricing :  A mind boggling Sing $16 for all of above!
I simply cannot believe it when I see the bill
and try to match it to the tremendous
quantity of food laid on the table.
Highly Recommended!

Pontian Wanton Noodles (Taman Abad, Near KSL City and Holiday Plaza / Non Halal)

With the opening of KSL city, I decided to try out Taman Abad eateries. I spotted Pontian Wanton Mee and decided to check if there are any difference between our lion city outlets to the originator.
Originating from Pontian, this chain of Wanton Mee restaurant offers hand made noodles with a variety of sauces. There are three choices of the sauce base: Ketchup, Chili or Black Sauce with Chili (Highly recommended). The Wanton Mee is served with Char Siew meat, vegetables as well as both fried and steamed Wanton. Their trade-mark is the bouncy and firm noodles. Most importantly, there are no preservatives added to the food.

So what is the difference between the two outlets on each side of the causeway?
1. Price (Do I even need to mention?)
Price is definitely decent in Johor compared to Singapore. In JB, Pontian Wanton Mee is sold as follows

  • Small (RM$4.00/S$1.60)
  • Medium (RM$5.00/S$2.09)
  • Large, It should be classified as HUGE! (RM$6.00/S$2.50)
I strongly advise you to go for the small serving which is way sufficient.  The Singapore outlets of Pontian Wanton Mee cost at least SGD$2.80 and its portion is terribly not enough! (You can easily finish up in 3 mouths, no kidding).
2. Quality

The Johor version Char Siew are definitely springy and good to bite on. Their Fried Wanton are really tasty and has generous fillings. Over in SIngapore, t
he Char Siew are too thinly sliced, while the deep-fried Wantons are too tiny and lacked any substantial bite.
3. Service
Like most restaurants in Johor Bahru, service appears sincere and polite. Some Singapore outlets are located in hawker centres or run in a Self-Serviced mode (Sg's way of "LAZY" disguised as Excellent and Gracious service, :) ). Enough said.

Tai Hong Kopitiam (JB Hakka Yong Tau Fu and Lei Cha / Non - Halal)

I stumbled across this eatery purely by chance. I was getting desperate and hungry on a particular Sunday as I missed the opening hours of the famous Kuey Teow Kia, Woon Kiang and realised it was close. Wanting to try something new, I brought my family to Jalan Kuning(behind Pelangi Leisure Mall) to try my luck. Luckily, Jalan Kuning did not disappoint in their abundance of eateries. We decided on Tai Hong Kopitiam after seeing the flow of customers streaming in.

As it was our first time eating at Tai Hong, we really did not know what to order. We ordered our favourite individual dishes like Curry Chicken, Mee Hoon Kueh, Zhu Cheoh Fan with Yong Tau Fu and Laksa. While waiting for our food, I realised that the majority of customers come here for the Yong Tau Fu Mee and Hakka Lei Cha.

Although their Curry Chicken and Mee Hoon Kueh seems ordinary, their Hakka Yong Tau is really tasty. The texture of their Tau Fu is as smooth as silk and their Tau Pok and Ngor Hiang are fried to perfect crispness yet not oily. My only regret visiting Tai Hong is that I have not tried their Lei Cha(which most customers are eating). I promise that I will come back and savour this famous Hakka Dish and blog on it in the near future.

Information
Opening Hours : Everyday (8am - 6pm). Closed on Thursday.

Signature Dishes : Hakka Yong Tau Fu and Lei Cha

Beside it is an "Ah - Khoon" Styled Coffee Eatery

Nice Environment

I did not get to
try their signature dish, Lei Cha.

(Lei Cha soup is made by pounding
mixture of tea leaves and possibly mints
to a very minty green tea like liquid.
The soup accompanies a bowl of
brown rice topped with plenty of nuts
(or roast soy beans), chopped long beans,
tofu, pickled as well as fresh vegetable.)
All their dishes

Curry Chicken, really spicy curry
served with tender Kampung Chicken

Curry Laksa, Yummy!

Superb Zhu Chong Fan
with sweet sauce and
delicious Yong Tau Fu

Not advisable to order.
If you really want to eat Mee Hoon Kueh,
do visit Restoran Yi Bao instead...

Restaurant Woon Kiang (JB's Kuey Chap / Non-Halal)

Restaurant Woon Kiang is a pretty popular Kway Teow Kia restaurant in JB. Kway Teow Kia is similar to the Kuey Chap in Singapore. The main difference is that instead of the squarish noodle that is used in Kuey Chap, Kway Teow Kia uses the flat noodle.

Woon Kiang's Kuay-Teow Kia is boiled in a herbal-like soup served with pig offal, braised duck meat, preserved salted vegetables, braised half-boiled eggs and various types of beancurd, depending on what you order. From my experience, the noodles are really smooth with their tasty soup and the pig intestine doesn't have an unpleasant taste like some of those served in Singapore.

However, I must admit, although Woon Kiang's standard is way better than our Sunny island's ordinary hawker's fare, it is still not as good as our best Kuey Chap eateries (which is usually very expensive and can sometimes come up to S$30 for 2 person).

Information
Opening Hours : Everyday (9am - 3pm, 6pm - 1am). Closed on Tuesdays. Sundays (6 pm - 1am).

Sin Hui Bin Restaurant - Reasonable Priced Seafood (Permas Jaya Sports Complex / Halal)

I stumbled across this restaurant from the net and immediately recognizes it as the restaurant I used to patronize in my younger days. Then, I was always on tours to JB and they always seem to bring us to this place (guess they must be paying good commission :) ). Anyway, the food is really good and cheap in my opinion...

Without further adieu, let me introduce Restoran Sin Hui Bin

This restaurant is located in a remote corner at Permas Jaya Street 4. It is situated in the premise of Permas Jaya Sports Complex. A lot of weddings are held here and tour groups organisers love to bring their Singapore Tourists here for makan. If you do not mind, you can even bring your children for a swim in the sports complex before the makan session.
